What To Do With That W2!

Pull My Finger? No, Wait…He Just Wants Your Money. Whew!

What To Do With That W2!It’s about that time of year again. The time of year when the government is either making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside or you’re stressed to the point of mental instability. It’s tax time! What To Do With That W2! So, for those who owe money, let’s face it… It just plain sucks. No one likes to pay taxes. However, the fortunate individuals who get a refund are ecstatic. It’s like Christmas in February!

W2 Cash

What To Do With That W2!The question that begs to be asked is “What will you spend it on?” Will you use the money for something important? Maybe invest it into your future or your child’s future? Will you put it away for a rainy day or maybe just store it in savings indefinitely? It’s so tempting to just blow it all (or a good chunk of it at least) on a new toy or household item.

To Buy Or Not To Buy?

What To Do With That W2!I remember a few years ago when my wife received a significant tax refund. She was so excited to finally have a fairly large amount of cash in the bank. So excited in fact, we decided to go out and purchase a new bed. The old bed was worn and I admit it was time to replace it. We didn’t bother looking for very long, simply because we were not looking for the best deal. We had money and we knew what we wanted.

Continued Insanity

After the bed, the buying continued on for the next few weeks. We decided to purchase a bedroom set to compliment the new bed, complete with headboard, nightstand etc. It also seemed like a good idea to buy some exercise equipment. Exercise is good right? So why not “invest” in our health? What To Do With That W2! It sounded like a good excuse at the time. Later, we moved on to a local entertainment store that was going out of business to take advantage of some savings on movies and video games. Investing and entertainment are not words that go together, but you probably knew that. Those games & movies are collecting dust now…

What To Do With That W2!50 Restaurant meals later…Before we knew it, a month or two had passed and the money was almost completely gone. What happened?!? The purchases were justified right? In our minds they were, but in reality we could have used that money a lot wiser…

Looking Back

What To Do With That W2!A wise move would have been to invest that money into something that could produce more money or even an entirely new income source. We could have invested it into a retirement account or a scholarship for our children. We could have even put that money towards building a business/income that could possibly replace our jobs completely.

This indeed would have been the most valuable of all the purchases since it could “buy back” some of the precious family time we all need with each other.

What About You?

Are you getting a refund this year? If so, what are you doing with that money? Be careful not to squander it on meaningless things. Develop a plan for that cash. Maybe you could put a portion in your savings account, donate some to your church/charity and invest the rest into something that could potentially bring additional income into your home…
